I recently saw 5yr old MN labrador with an odd looking skin plaque on his ventral thorax. Grossly looked like lots of small skin tags clumped together with thickened skin underneath. Biopsies were taken and histopathology came back

Re: Odd skin mass

The implication from interpretation of just the name suggests abnormal sebaceous glands forming a chronic plaque in the skin. I would think it is probably congenital in origin despite the dog's age and would suggest it is more unsightly than serious, I would have thought excision would be curative if the owners are bothered by it.

Damn, David got there a nano-second before me!

Re: Odd skin mass

We often see them, especially on the elbows. They are a type of sebaceous 'cyst' or hyperplasia if you like, albeit with an odd appearance. Very rarely they can mutate to a sebaceous carcinoma. Removal is usually only done (with us) due to irritation, infection, bleeding etc. and is curative.

This info was last checked about 12-18m ago so may well be wroth ringing the lab to discuss as histopaths often reclassify things at a whim.

Re: Odd skin mass

Did they provide an interpretation, suggested treatment plan etc?
