I would like some advice for 2 cases.
The first one is a 1.5 year old Ferret who belongs to our receptionist. He was presented few days ago for inappetence and lethargy. He was found dehydrated, and possible palpation of a small mass in caudo

Re: 2 Cases - One Ferret and One Rabbit

I don't understand why the pictures have that strannge colour on the Forum.
Here are the X-rays of the Ferret. Although not good quality, sorry they wre taken with a phone from a normal film.

If it is a staff members pet we would usually be able to do things like that at reduced cost as it is mostly your time.

For the rabbit I'd probably want to do x-rays to check for bone and or joint involvement and swab for culture and sensitivity. Baytril isn't very good for anaerobes so might not be good enough. I don't think lancing and draining is good enough for most rabbit abscesses and they need opening up and everything scooping out, I know that for dental abscess Mark Rowland packs them with manuka honey and then goes back in again to clear it all out, but i'm not sure if that would be suitable in this case without seeing pictures and x-rays. If you could post some pictures it might give us a better idea and maybe mark or Marie will come along with some better ideas.

I think the main thing is to work out why it has abscesses in the first place, is it kept in an adequately cleaned environment with decent bedding, does it have urine staining, teeth problems or something else.

The other thing is it sounds like it might be quite painful so I would probably be giving an opioid as well as metacam at a good dose. I'd probably hospitalise so that it can have injectable pain relief.

I know that for some owners that would be a lot of money to spend on a rabbit but if you don't treat it properly it has a pretty poor prognosis.
