I've a 2 week old cocker spaniel pup with entropion. The owner noticed that the eyes had a thick crusty discharge before the pup's eyes opened. I saw the pup a few days after the eyes had opened and it has bilateral entropion of its lower eyelids

Re: 2 week old pup with entropion

At that age I just got the owners to evert the eyelids as often as they could [bloodhounds always had entropion!!] and in a number, if not all, the results were normality.

Surgery, if needed, could come later. Entropion is sort of self-perpetuating, but if you stop it starting it sort of stops [poor explanation i know]

Re: 2 week old pup with entropion

Update - I did the surgery today and all went well. Blue nylon with a swaged on needle, 2 vertical mattress sutures per eye. Very straightforward if somewhat fiddly.

I have done two (I think) young puppies and give them iso by mask until sleepy. Do a vertical mattress tacking suture to pull eyelid out. I have just used blue MNF with swaged on needle. Just 1 suture each side. Just wipe hair with some Hibi - don't even clip.

Seems well tolerated and I'm sure I never had to do further Sx on the pups, they must have grown out of it.

[Often do the same in lambs using left over bits of absorbable suture - seems a 'better' job than LA into the lower lid]

The opthalmologists may come along and call me a heathen.
