the husband of our Head Nurse runs a pet transport company and is licensed to transport quarantine dogs. He was called by a local council to take a dog to quarantine which had come over from Ireland without a passport/rabies, etc. I know that Ireland

Re: Dogs coming into UK from Ireland
I phoned DEFRA.

I've been going home to Ireland annually all my life - this is a new one on me. So I phoned DEFRA and the nice lady clarified that my dog needs: rabies vacc and pet passport. She could not explain why, except to say "them's the rules" since 2012. We did not get asked by the ferry company or customs to show anything for our two dogs last year.

Hmm... the world has gone mad!

Arse. So when may boyfriend and I get a dog and take it with us on visits to Anglesey where his parents live, I will need a pet passport to load it into the car in Belfast, drive to Dublin port and get the boat to Holyhead? Sheesh.

I wonder if the vets who deal with farmers in the border counties whose farms straddle the border are going to tell the farmers that their collies will need a passport to be able to round up sheep in the back field? Wouldn't like to be the one to tell Thomas "Slab" Murphy that his dogs need British passports! Although I'm not sure if farming is his major enterprise now.

Maybe the Northern Ireland assembly will agree to push for an exemption...yeah the legislation could be passed in about 12 years if they force it through quickly :-)
LOL

Have you ever tried TB testing a farm which straddles the border - nightmare - especially if the only decent crush is in the North side of the shed and you're testing the Southern cattle and someone from the ministry decides to do a spot inspection that day...

I know one vet who interested his local MLA in the North in getting free of the ban they have up there on using cheaper human medicines for dogs and cats - I think he'd got as far as asking the Department what the legal position was with respect to the enforcement of such a rule in the North... I wonder how many years it will take to answer that!

My dog has crossed the border numerous times and I have no intention of vaccinating him pointlessly for rabies.

I think the Stenaline from Dublin to Hollyhead crossing might ask for this though. Belfast to Liverpool is probably you're best bet if they do and you don't fancy giving your dog an unecessary vaccination.

Re: Dogs coming into UK from Ireland

Arse. Not enforced on land crossings - there are obviously no border checks between Northern Ireland and rest of Ireland to enforce such bureaucracy.
