This question is actually for my own Tortoise, a 6.2KG African Sulcat, female, of unknown age, I've had her 3 months. I am a Uk Vet living in West Africa so she gets plenty of sun light (30C + mostly) and lives in the garden in the sand, she

Re: Sick Tortoise + flubendazole

Hi

The dose is correct. Just a straight forward diffquick stain is a good start, post the rads also if you wish.

Re: Sick Tortoise + flubendazole

Hi,

Do you think the Ceftriaxone dose of 50mg/kg seems right? No other contact with tortoises in the few months since I've had her before that though she was with 2 other tortouises which as far as I know are in ok health just now. I do have a few hens though which all seem well and we do have quite a few pigeons who come in to the garden to eat the alfalfa hay so the tortoise is in direct contact with these birds. I will try and get a microscope slide from somewhere, would it just be a straight forward blood smear?

thanks in advance, much appreciated

Re: Sick Tortoise + flubendazole

Sorry that was me.

Re: Sick Tortoise + flubendazole

The odema could result from multisystemic infection and would make me think of viral disease. the Ceftriaxone dose is sid for 7d sc.
Could you even do a blood smear to look for inclusion bodies/haemoparasites?

Re: Sick Tortoise + flubendazole

Hi,

I can get some human drugs, I have a vial of Ceftriaxone 1g, I could get ciproxcin tablets and then there's the basic amoxycillin and oxytetracycline that the vets have, these seem to be the only antibiotics I've seen at the Vet's here. I have found a dose online of 50mg/kg for the Ceftriaxone but it didn't say how often I need to give it or for how long...any ideas? Would it be normal to get such a ventral neck swelling with a resp infection? I have tried listening to her lungs but didn't hear much.

thanks a lot for the advice

Re: Sick Tortoise + flubendazole

What antibiotics have you got?

Re: Sick Tortoise + flubendazole

30mg/kg for the flubendazole off the top of my head . worms is unlikley the problem though. Viral/ mycoplasmal/ bacterial resp disease ar more likely. Antibiotics, fluids are needed. Can you do bloods etc? Goodluck.
P.s. cranio caudal rads of lungs wouldn't hurt, post them here if you like.
