I have a friend with two degus, one of which has started sneezing over the past week or so. It's two years old and otherwise systemically well. It seems to have occasional sneezes but

Re: Sneezing degu help?

Hi,

Steer clear of the beta lactams, macrolides etc. Most chinchilla drugs can be safely used in degus.

Diet chenges and pain relief form the cornerstone of treatment, once elongation has occured, it will not receed and needs to be managed/prevented as much as possible from worsening. In rabbits, extraction is an option but in these little guys it is difficult at best.

Hope this helps.

Re: Sneezing degu help?

Thanks for your reply Mark

Do you experience many side effects with antibiotic use in degus?

If molar roots are the underlying cause, what can be done to rectify this? Is it just a case of controlling the symptoms with the NSAIDs/antibiotics etc? Obviously dental work may be required if the crowns are malaligned/overgrown, but is there much you can do for the actual roots once elongation has occurred? This would be interesting to know regarding rabbits too as I've never fully understood this!

Re: Sneezing degu help?

Hello Rebecca

Head radiography would be a good start. Many degus have molar root elongation with sinus involvement that can cause chronic respiratory signs. Nebulisation, antibacterials and NSAIDS help but may require repeated treatments. I would go with marbocyl 10mg/Kg sid (use the injectable form orally). Post the rads here if you wish.
