We used them for a while but found there was very little correlation between the temperature suggested by the chip scanner, and the rectal temperature (chip was generally lower) so we went back to standard ones. I've had a few fail over the years, and I think the service from the chop companies is certainly better if you buy more expensive chips. I suspect some of the apparent failures are badly implanted ones at rescue kennels that then fall out. Not all owners are keen to have an X-ray just to see if the chip is still present.

Re: Microchip failure
Bob,
Do you also sell readers so concerned owners can take their own dog 's temperature?

Why would a concerned owner want to take their dogs temperature? I have had one or two 'disappear' and I suspect they have worked their way back out. I always try to check them after 2-4 weeks and try to check each one every time the animal comes in. This is part of the service the client is paying for when they let me chip their pet rather than use a 'free' or discount chip.

I make no apology for charging properly for a good chip and 'looking after it' for the lifetime of the pet. Of course pets with other chips get a similar service here but I will generally charge if a chip fails, not least because most clients jump at the opportunity to have a thermometer chip implanted in their pet!

Re: Microchip failure

We use Bayer microchips and have had two occasions that I know of where the chips failed. We checked the chips were still in place with radiography, and Bayer were happy to replace them free of charge once confirmed the chip was still in place but not reading. These were microchips that had been in place a couple of years and previously been shown to be working fine at vaccination check ups etc.

Re: Microchip failure

I genuinely can't remember unfortunately Michael, was in my first job!

Re: Microchip failure
'if we replaced everyone that stopped working free of charge we'd go out of business' which I thought was a little worrying...
Name and shame!

We use Animalcare Identichips and have never had one move. Occasionally there is a problem and they replace FOC no problem. Once found a pouch and the chip had escaped the needle. They even replaced one that a colleague pushed right through the skin on a wiggly puppy.

Touch wood have never had one fail and they stay put. Not the cheapest, but worth it.

[I do worry about these cheap Dogs Trust ones, and sure they cannot match up to the quality I am used to]

Re: Microchip failure

I once phoned a microchip company (can't remember which) to report a previously working microchip which had failed, and request a FOC replacement. And maybe the newly implanted chips will fail in 4,6,8,12 months. It is unsettling

Re: Microchip failure

I suspect odd ones make their way straight back out. I once had a chip withdraw 50% as I withdraw the needle as a new grad. I had a momentary panic what to so, so I shoved it in with my finger and gave the sin a massage. No problems and it was working a year later at the booster.

If Virbac have sorted the problem and will replace FOC that is what I would do.

Re: Microchip failure

I can understand chip migration especially in thin, active dogs and this seems to have improved over time.
I scan dogs at vaccination when I remember and have had 3 failures over the past year. In the post above I was told 1 in 100.000 and they break as glass in rare cases. Guess I'd better start doing the lottery.

I'm more concerned with the mobility of them and some scanners that are used.

The client jovially asks if you can check the chip and a few minutes later you find it, half way down the front leg. What concerns me is, if the dog was scanned as a stray would anyone have the patience to find it?
