Parenteral Penicillin and Amoxycillin

In 10 years I have had a fair bit of conflicting advice from GP's, lecturers and exotic specialists alike regarding parenteral pinicillins/Amoxycillin, over and above input from this forum.
IMO they appear

Re: Parenteral Penicillins in Guinea Pigs

I don't know what advice you have recieved Glenn, all I can say is what I would or wouldn't do and in this case I definitely would not.

Re: Parenteral Penicillins in Guinea Pigs

Wouldn't penicillins be more likely to induce this, as this is the reason why it's not meant to be used - can cause fatal dysbiosis?

Re: Parenteral Penicillins in Guinea Pigs

[quote user="James Laidlaw"]

One example I would consider them would be if the other oral options had caused bloat G.I. upset in the individual.

Re: Parenteral Penicillins in Guinea Pigs

GP in above post is Guinea Pig, not GP as in the OP.

Re: Parenteral Penicillins in Guinea Pigs

I have seen a client's GP die within a few days following dysbiosis after an old school boss gave Betamox LA and then was a bit sheepish after discussing the label warnings. I try not to use any product that specifically states not to use on the label, or in the formulary - mainly I think the risk is oral drugs, but the injectable states not to use in this species, so why not use something else? Are they that much better than baytril or septrin? Spectrum would be similar to baytril, but I expect baytril to cover a few of the things that penicillins wouldn't, but my pharmacology is a fairly distant memory!
