Don't like catgut much, and to be honest at Uni the teaching has started to move away from using it, towards synthetic materials.

I use pretty much monocryl or PDS exclusively, don't like the tissue drag I get with vicryl, and I find it snaps to easily (though I have been accused of not knowing my own strength)

Another vote for PDS. (Still like catgut for cat spays/small bitch spays though). I thought rabbits were also supposed to form granulomas with vicryl

Yes- by far! You do have to use a slightly different technique to vicryl to prevent snapping - hard to explain but you kind of bend the suture over the needle holders when pulling and use a gently increasing pull. If you 'snatch' at it it will snap. As Michael said, once it is pulled down it ain't moving - unlike vicryl which unravels before your eyes! (I use it for cats and dogs, but not any exotics).

I agree - nothing as secure as catgut when it beds down into itself.

I use vicryl for ligatures and skin and pds for closing the linea alba.

+1 for Vicryl or Polysorb.

I don't like catgut for anything, find it horrible to work with and tie ligatures. I find it breaks too easily.

Gillian - do you prefer catgut instead of Vicryl for ligatures?

Or just use monocryl/vicryl and factor the cost into the cost of the surgery. I haven't used catgut for years now, and I've only been graduated 10.

synthetic absorbable braided PGA. We use violine on a cassette. Cheaper than vicryl.
