Thanks for the help folks - I'll pass it all on to the breeder, much as it goes against the grain when the initial question translates roughly as "Hey, my bitch is infertile, wouldn't it be great to breed from her!".

Where's that Watkinson chappie when you need him?

I had it (Cabergolin) recommended by a colleague who does lots of breeding work. 0.5 micrograms per kg sid over 10-18 days, if signs of preestrus are present continue for 2 days. if there is any vomiting try half dose. If it doesn't work try buserelin two weeks later. Don't try to induce heat if the last heat has not been at least four month ago. Bear in mind this is not my personal experience though, I have driven away all breeders but one ages ago :-)

MSD have a protocol using buserelin (Receptal). We used it on 2 bitches for the same gamekeeper and both dogs came into season 1 had normal pupps and the other a freaky littler - alive but all had deformities. I don't blame the drug (I buy 50 bottles at a time for use in cows) but it made me a little reluctant to mess too much with these dogs.

In people cystic fibrosis is on the increase due to IVF techniques. Sometimes these bitches aren't cycling for a reason.

[not saying I wouldn't do it again]

[basic physiology would suggest that prolactin only present 2nd half of pregnancy and into lactation, it should decline as the milk dries up. I know it has been used to cause deliberate late abortion in the bitch as I believe it has a supportive role in pregnancy. They are a little hormonally weird, no maternal recognition of pregnancy etc so I may be talking rubbish]

It's really good and discusses all the new repro drugs. From memory she does talk about induction of oestrus in bitches - (I think it was using Suprelorin, but I may be wrong).

(I'm nothing to do with Virbac - but this is a really good webinar !).
