Given Matt's position as a specialist, and how the cascade works I think his point is still valid. Temgesic, not licensed, vetergesic, licensed.

If there was an unlicensed NSAID and a licensed one - you have to use the latter under cascade. So while I recognise your tongue in cheek post, I'm also pedantic enough to point out the shortcomings.

Also, the study was in rabbits, so you should have said rabbits skin, not dogs.

I'm in an odd mood today...

Re: sublingual buprenorphine
Owner compliance is my own justification for using temgesic over vetergesic/bupcare when I choose to use it.
Why not...

rabbit saliva is about 9.4 so should be ok as this is fairly similar to cat saliva.

However the effect is variable because of the increased keratinisation of the oral mucosa (because of thier diet). This makes absorption variable at best. (Source D Heard, Zoological prof. University of Florida)

Therefore I dont use this method much.

Hope that helps.

Re: sublingual buprenorphine
look at temgesic tabs
Had a dog with autoimmune prob and we had to remove all its nails/nail beds, already on steroid and anyway NSAIDS caused severe GI signs. Dog also got vv stressed when kenneled so used to send home post op with couple of doses of oral buprenorphine for analgesia. Owner a human carer and commented that dog seemed v settled and comfortable with dose.
