Gillian, yeah, he had large intestinal dx prior to supportive care.

I think I'll give this guy another dose of patience. Chin slings do look a faff.

Re: Chin Sling

[quote user="Mark Rowland"]Often following reduction of the molars it can take upto 3 weeks for the muscles to regain their strength by which time the molars have elongated again.
Yeah - that is my experience too. But oddly this particular GP gained weight and did well on syringe feeding, soft food and analgesia, and had its teeth done every 4 weeks or so, but even after a couple of months had a floppy jaw. The owner went to see a MaxFax specialist to see if anything else could be done (he really loved his GP) but they couldn't find any other reason for the lack of jaw tone either. Last I heard they had continued with the supportive care etc. into the long term.

The reason is usually muscle atrophy due to inability to close the jaw as a result of molar root elongation. Often following reduction of the molars it can take upto 3 weeks for the muscles to regain their strength by which time the molars have elongated again. Therefore I advise clients that the procedure may need repeating.

Supportive care with analgesia and syringe feeding is required in the meantime. I have not used slings myself.

Some (like me) prefer cisapride to ranitidine or metoclopramide. In any event the best prokinetic of all is food so I generally continue with analgesia, syringe feed with some recovery formula plus antioxidants and give fluids as necessary. Remain aware though that gps are capable of sudden rapid deterioration.

goodluck

Radiographs showed massive molar and incisor overgrowth with no other problem but even after dental work the GP couldn't use its jaw properly. It had a good apetite and was maintained on syringe feeding and moistened pellets but never did manage to eat hard foods.
