Other thoughts are hookworm or Zinc deficiency - both of which I used to see in greyhounds years ago.

Dog has been on Carprofen and Co-Amoxycillin since the biopsies were taken.

This is the dogs front left paw, the area of inflammed skin had only being noticed by the owners 24 hours previously. Prior to this lesions were only on one of the hind paws.

This is the area of eroded skin on the rear foot - it has improved from when the biopsies were taken and appears to be healing.

The lesion on the upper pad in the picture is worse than when it was biopsied. When it was biopsied it was a circular area of differently pigmented dermis, it now appears a little larger and has inflammed skin proximal to it.

Plan is to have the dog back in for bloods to rule out any liver disease and food allergy serology (another differential from the lab tho the clincal history and signalment don't really fit). Anyone got any other ideas? Owners cannot apply topical meds to the feet

Re: Split Paw Pad Disease

[quote user="Mike Dale"]

Is it a corn? Do I understand there was a lesion on the adjacent toe pad? Sometimes a corn develops on a pad that becomes obliged to take extra weight. They can be dug out using something like small spoon curette. They tend to recur (most experience in greyhounds) but recently I have found sudocream (nappy cream) to be rather fine at reducing incidence of recurrence and in one case resolution occurred in three out of three pads on a foot using sudocream alone. (I had been buying time prior to a scheduled GA for another issue!). Just a thought. Corns are usually fairly circular separated from the rest of the pad by an obvious fault line and usually darker or lighter than the peripheral normal pad tissue. I think the cream works by softening the tissue and I guess there is some relationship between the role of Zinc in keratin and its presence in sudocream.
