Has had the occasional very mild episode, but nothing that stuck; nothing out of the ordinary there. Noted to be stiff in hindlimbs at walk, but not priapic. Swelling started

Re: paraphimosis in an old terrier

PTS this morning. No sensation or blood flow in penis; too many other issues for a penile amputation

Re: paraphimosis in an old terrier

It's not looking so good.

Under sedation, there wasn't any obvious strangulation and I could insert a finger between prepuce and penis, back to the level of the paired bulbs, which were extremely turgid. No resistance to passage of a catheter, and whilst prostate was possibly a bit enlarged, it was smooth - and I'd have expected flaccidity with a hyperplasia/cyst.

I suspect something's happening at the A-V level, but the practice ultrasound is currently being repaired. So I drained off some extremely dark, sludgy blood and this reduced the size enough to at least sheath the penis. I also infused some lig/adrenaline along the length of the urethra.

Unfortunately, the penis is now pretty dark in colour and blood flow appears to be very limited. May have to make a decision on amputation in the next 48 hours. I was thinking about the use of a prostaglandin like alprostadil, but this could either fail to work entirely, or cause another bout of priapism. Out of interest, anybody ever used terbutaline?

There's still control of urination, but the tip of the penis appears quite numb and black, and no, there are no photos.......

Re: paraphimosis in an old terrier
Potassium bromide was allegedly dispensed in soldiers' tea to reduce libido in days gone by.
Some of there old terriers (the entire ones) seem to turn into dirty old men, I'm not sure there is anything pathological about it.

Re: paraphimosis in an old terrier

?
