I've moved to NZ for 6 months to see some large animal work over here, and have just encountered my first case of spring eczema. As an uninitiated 'pommie', I was looking for some advice/knowledge about this condition from anyone who may have

Re: Spring Eczema

I remember all those CIDRs - not suprisingly I'm now in small animal practice! I did 50 calvings in one season, only 1 of them was easy! Very good experience though. For the jugular I found twisting round the neck and sitting on the head mean't you had good access to the extended side. - The bags they use (bomac?) are so much better than the bottles over here!

Who are you out there with? Anyone we know?

Do you know anyone out there who would be interested in a 1 month Locum in Auckland in January - get house (nice, with pool) and car (golf GTi) and 2 weeks in his bach in the bay of islands (Taupo bay).

Rotorua (aka Rotavegas!) was cool, we loved white island and the tongariro crossing, kaikoura and the glaciers, really missing it now - especially as the weather here is horrible!

Have fun - I won't start talking about the prolapses!

Re: Spring Eczema

Hi Chris, long time no see!

We've been out here 3 months and loving it, apart from the shoulder ache from inserding CIDr's! We're in ngatea in the NI, just outside Thames.

The two bulls I saw had photosens around the face and feet (were Herefords or 'white faces'!), and were quite swollen around the face and pyrexic.

Wasn't sure what to treat with so they got the obligatory flunixin/engemycin combination!

The farmers here don't really like helping too much do they! Thank god for milk veins sometimes!

We've got 2 weeks in SI in december and 2 weeks here at the end.

Re: Spring Eczema

Hi Phil - you must be having a great time!

Where in NZ are you? I have just returned to the UK from a year in NZ including the 07 calving season in Canterbury.

Saw some cases of excema, bled some and they all had v high liver enzymes - the farmers seemed to be expecting this! I think it was a photosensatisation type thing secondary to liver disease - I can't remember what caused the liver disease unfortunately! Lesions were restricted to white or hairless areas such as the udder, most were culled.

How are the unassisted IV injections going? I certainly found the Farmers were very good at the basic milk fevers/staggers etc as well as the not too difficult calvings.

Any plans to do any touristy type stuff?
