I had an elderly Doberman present with a history of having eaten a number of cupcakes wrapped in clingfilm, plus the styrofoam cake stand. He ended up with a gastric dilatation ( no volvulus). The owners declined surgery, so I just decompressed him with a large bore stomach tube and kept him in for a few days on iv fluids. I saw him 1 week later for a check up and the owners said that he had passed a 7'2" "rope"of tablecloth ( which they hadn't realised he had eaten), stones and cling film. I managed to keep a straight face until the female owner confessed that at the end of the "rope" was a pair of her knickers! Apparently they were standing behind him with a measuring tape as he produced it.

We used to have a retriever in the practice who was a regular pantie eater. Pretty much a fetishist as the owner was careful after the first few goes. He would get them from the washing bin and break into the bathroom while the owner was in the shower. They all came out the way nature intended but could take up to a week. I favour bulk laxatives like fybagel rather than liquid paraffin to encourage such things through. They seem to work quite well and are less of a problem if it does come to the enterotomy.

What is it with thongs? The least attractive item of underwear created by man (woman?). I hardly ever wear them nowadays.

I had to remove a size 18 thong from the intestine of a young Dalmation once. Didn't go down well with the wife of the owner- long and short was that it appears it belonged to the mistress! Cue many awkward silences in the consulting room at discharge...

Update - I've spoken to the owner, who apparently didn't answer her phone the multiple times I let it ring for a good 90 seconds because 'It had frozen'

Dog seems bright and happy, she has some lactulose from her old dog she got from a previous vets ('Don't worry, it's still in date') and has been giving the dog this since last night (5mls last night, 5mls today).

Told her there's no hard or fast rule when it comes to these things, some pass, some don't. 'Oh, so if it starts coming out of his bum can I just pull it out?'

It might still be in his tummy. I saw a schnauzer this morning that ate a pair of pants last night. One tin of chappie and a jag of apomorphine later, voila! he puked up the pants. (Managed to hit the newspaper too not the consult floor - made my day!) Mind you, trying to get your client to pay for apo esp if turns out unproductive V+ may be a different matter.

I once had a young puppy presenting with intestinal obstruction which went to surgery. We removed a very skimpy thong which the owners teenage daughter was very embarrassed about.

Our head nurse has a spaniel who insists on eating socks. Most go through uneventfully but on a couple of occasions the dog has been pretty unwell. She (dog not nurse) was monitored by ultrasound and has not needed to be opened up yet!

I bought the family a metal letterbox so her five year old child could 'post' dirty socks etc rather than leave them lying around. Much more fun!

I have been tormented by one particular Golden Retriever with a crush for Nylons and socks. He was an unlucky guy it seems, I remember at least three times we opened him up because the stuff got stuck. Apart from him I'd second that much more passes the gut than one would think....

I find that material like socks and underwear don't pass as well as some of the sharp objects discussed recently. In this case I'd just monitor and if any problems occur either give Barium and x-ray or go straight in. I hope the owner is reliable enough to check feces and come back in if any GI signs appear, maybe you should write that down and make them sign it :-(
