This week we have diagnosed parvovirus in 3 of a litter of 10 labrador puppies. Happily two of them seem to be getting better, although the 3rd is still touch and go.

Wynne, I don't understand? You say he should have a 9 month ban on anything, but you clean and close down for less than a day in your own situation? Agreed you can't clean the grass, but I assume the barn isn't grass floored and there are paths to it that can be cleaned and disinfected as best possible. Then avoid the fields for everything but fully vaccinated animals, which will still have a risk of contracting parvo, so best to avoid fields altogether if possible. No need for there to be one plan for him and a different plan for anyone else...

[/quote]

In fairness to Wynne James I think there is a world of difference between decontaminating a veterinary practive as opposed to a barn and acres of land! Practices are designed to be easy to clean - few or no poropus surfaces, not very many nooks and crannies. It is usually also to identify the at risk areas and we have the kit to do the job properly. Without having seen the barns I can only imagine what cleaning thsoe properly would take. The point is with regards to the OP that if the owner takes his advice, and parvo occurs as a result in animals he is housing for commercial reasons - will the OP be liable for his professional veterinary advice? I think he would be - so he needs to think very carefully about what that advice is going to be.

Re: Parvovirus - how long should he quarantine?

we have a local guy just as you describe, but he is very carefull, which is why he always vaccinates with imported from Ireland vaccines

Re: Parvovirus - how long should he quarantine?

Wynne, I don't understand? You say he should have a 9 month ban on anything, but you clean and close down for less than a day in your own situation? Agreed you can't clean the grass, but I assume the barn isn't grass floored and there are paths to it that can be cleaned and disinfected as best possible. Then avoid the fields for everything but fully vaccinated animals, which will still have a risk of contracting parvo, so best to avoid fields altogether if possible. No need for there to be one plan for him and a different plan for anyone else...

Re: Parvovirus - how long should he quarantine?

I always close down for the rest of the day,and thoroughly disinfect, and charge the owner a decontamination fee I also disinfect the pavement outside I don't however have the problem of parvo on grass (organic material )

Practical plan without getting self righteous/preachy;

Clean and disinfect barn/buildings as best you can

Vaccinate all dogs on the premises

Ask to see vaccination records for anything coming on

Carry on with his business. Presumably he's likely to pay attention to vaccination reminders next time!

How many of you would close down your practice premises for days/weeks /months after having a parvo case come in?
