This past week I've had a run of 3 CRF cats that absolutely refuse to eat Renalzin, happily munching down renal diet but will not touch it if it has Renalzin on top. Our nursing manager has informed me that Ipakitine is being discontinued

Re: Renalzin & alternative phosphate binders
It bugs me that idexx continue to use their cat parameters for phos - I don't think I'd tolerate a level of 2 or more for ANY cat.
They are true reference ranges decided from a normally distributed population of normal 'healthy' cats, dis-guarding the outlying 5%. That is what a reference range should reflect.

If it is deemed desirable for it to be lower, fine. But leave the stats alone. Otherwise it is misleading.

Bit like cholesterol in people - they are striving for lower than occurs naturally. I have no doubt that some normal healthy cats have a phosphorus above 2.2 and no kidney problems.

Re: Renalzin & alternative phosphate binders
Our nursing manager has informed me that Ipakitine is being discontinued,
Just ordered and received some Ipakitine so it so still about.

Re: Renalzin & alternative phosphate binders
Their creatinine reference range is higher than the IRIS guidlines also.

Thanks Rajat, yeah the alucaps are AlOH, just a pain to divide up for cats, I'm sure I read somewhere about a AlOH gel or something but maybe it wasn't in the UK.

Re: Renalzin & alternative phosphate binders

All are still hyperphosphataemic on renal diets - not according to lab reference ranges (Idexx has up to 2.2 as normal), but the IRIS recommendations (where the aim for stage 2 patients would be phosphate <1.45, stage 3 <1.6, stage 4 <1.9)

Exacto mundo!

Other phos binders that are cheap and easy to use are aluminum hydroxide capsules. powder can be sprinkled onto food.

Is there a reason you are using Renalzin with renal diets? My understanding, though I may be mistaken, was that the renal diets were phosphate restricted so there shouldn't be a need for Renalzin as well, I mainly use it in cats that won't eat the renal diets.
A number of cats with CKD will still develop significant hyperphosphataemia even with renal diets so an addition is sometimes required. There is always the option of squirting the Renalzin straight in the mouth although they can resent that and hyper-salivate. I wouldn't mourn the loss of Ipakitine as it is IME even less palatable in most cases. Sometimes you have to accept you can lead the horse to water but you can't make it drink.
