My boss has asked me to look in to it...my initial thought it that it's not necessary - I remember years ago people adding Hibiscrub and totally gumming them up but maybe there is something new...

Just remember to release the pressure in the wash bottle before unscrewing the top! Theatre smells wonderfully clean thanks to the Miltons. Very soaked nurse and Miltons dripping from the ceiling!

You can get a fine in-line filter which prevents the water line blocking in the descaler or worse, in the flexible lead, as in a Bobcat. You'll be amazed at the black crud that collects in it.

It has Luer male and female ends so you need a narrow gauge water line. Easily changed when dirty though.

Re: Adding an antibacterial or antiseptic to Dental Machine Water
Don't ask me to explain for Mr. Jobsworth! It may vary with water board, but round here they like you to have a non-return valve for a domestic outside tap, assuming it comes off the rising main. It does make some sense – you don't really want bacteria swirling back into your mains water. I can't understand why it wasn't good enough for the dental machine though. Perhaps Mr. J. didn't understand.

Re: Adding an antibacterial or antiseptic to Dental Machine Water

You can get little kits for assessing the microbial load in cfu per litre in your waterline water. The results can be an education.
People are referring to both their scalers and their air-driven units, I think.

Mr. George will be well aware, but I fear many veterinary surgeons are not, of the big problem of the biofilm which forms very quickly in the waterlines and can increase to spectacular proportions. Running through with disinfectant after every working day is important and helps a lot, but even then it would be good practice to clean the waterlines with a chemical system designed for the purpose.

You can get little kits for assessing the microbial load in cfu per litre in your waterline water. The results can be an education.

Re: Adding an antibacterial or antiseptic to Dental Machine Water

I'm not sure what's meant by "dental machine". For cleaning at end of the day we run though with disinfectant for the tubes for 90 seconds.

Re: Adding an antibacterial or antiseptic to Dental Machine Water
My dental scaler is connected directly to the gravity feed water supply. It was connected to the mains but the local water authority sent a jobsworth round who said we couldn't do that in case it flashed back into the mains water supply. Quite how he imagined the difference in pressure would allow this is difficult to contemplate but then he has to justify his job. Still is works just the same, no reservoirs, no pumping up the pressure, no worries about stagnant water.
Yes, but I wouldn't allow anything into my machines but distilled water.
We were told not to use distilled water but to rely on the chlorine in tap water for the main machine. We did have a problem with our ultrasonic scaler because of algae (apparently) so dilute Miltons was recommended!

Strange how advice differs!

Both machines have been going strong for years so no evidence this has done any harm.

Re: Adding an antibacterial or antiseptic to Dental Machine Water
You can add something designed for the purpose, but many things will either acutely or chronically bugger up the machinery. Many of these chemicals can be quietly and insidiously corrosive, and you don't find out until it's too late

My own feeling, for what it's worth, is that the cooling-irrigating water is just that and it simply does not need any additives. Sluicing plenty of chlorhexidine about separately is the way to "disinfect" the mouth. If I want to medicate a subgingival pocket, I irrigate it with a specially-prepared chlorhexidine from a syringe with an irrigating needle..

The Australian machines have two reservoirs, one for CLS and one for plain water. The primary purpose of the CLS is to flush all the waterlines after use, in order to reduce biofilm formation. Some people also use the CLS solution as the irrigant while scaling. That's OK and might perhaps improve the process. However, also remember that all these chemicals are irritant and damaging to the mucosa with a certain length of exposure. People make comments like "so, if it's getting to be a long procedure, I switch from CLS to water". OK, if it works for them, but it's not the way I care to work.

Keep water water, I say!

Re: Adding an antibacterial or antiseptic to Dental Machine Water

Too late - I was on the phone to a client whilst composing my reply!

Re: Adding an antibacterial or antiseptic to Dental Machine Water

I always put a bit of water soluble iodine in the water reservoir (=garden sprayer) for the US scaler. Vet Instrumentation do a proprietary chlorhexadine that they say is safe. It is expensive

It is helpful to reduce bacterial counts, but tbh, I use chlorhex prep before extractions anyways in th emouth, this is just an extra. Does smell nice and I like the fact that when I scale sub gingivally I am getting a nice jet of chlorhex up there fwiw....Apparently helps burr cutting too (how I dont know)
