These are not minimum prices they are 'standard' prices. A dental scale and polish was more than that when I qualified in 1984.
They state a standard price and I assume the 'minimum' price is the figure to do the 'standard' procedure if you book far enough ahead. I have no issues with offering a minimum price or a guide price, both can be useful for clients.

I struggle to see the viability of a g/a scale and polish done well for fifty odd quid let alone offering a discount! I am sure they have done their maths so I won't lie awake worrying about their business!

It's interesting this human dentistry stuff actually. When I was reseraching physician agency a few weeks ago I came across this:

http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/bpl/jems/2005/00000014/00000003/art00007

Which is worrying. What did the GDC do about this stuff, Mr George?

This was more expected however:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=BDJ%202002%3B%20193%3A%20471%E2%80%93473

Scientific studies, too.
All of which could be applied to any human behaviour. You are being unfair to persecute the member of one profession when similar things would apply to many in our own. Nobody owns a practice or altuistic reasons. Mind you I don't feel that Pynadath needs my defense, he has demonstrated a remarkable ability in that regards himself

Re: Rabbit vs black bin liner...
Rachel I agree with you but start from the beginning - university. Things need to be changed at their core- and many vets may see dentistry as 'dirty' or inferior and to be left to the nurses to do (not me btw).. Once we recognise its importance and give it value, like we do for other body systems, as students, we will come into practice armed with knwoledge and confidence in our knowledge and be able to convince clients of the same.

Otherwise it is left to the few who are interested in it, or recognise sometime after graduation about its importance and then start to get interested in providing a better service which is still difficult if the rest of the practice is not on board.

£50 dentals? wow.

It's interesting this human dentistry stuff actually. When I was reseraching physician agency a few weeks ago I came across this:

http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/bpl/jems/2005/00000014/00000003/art00007

Which is worrying. What did the GDC do about this stuff, Mr George?

This was more expected however:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=BDJ%202002%3B%20193%3A%20471%E2%80%93473

I can kinda see why. They prefer the term COHAT (Comprehensive Oral Health Assesment and Treatment) to reflect more accurately what it is we do when we book a 'dental.
If they are ignorant enough to regard "a dental"as a standard procedure then I doubt if their work is worth anything, let alone £50
I could not agree more !

The best is when owners proudly tell you they have had their dogs teeth 'cleaned' three times in the last year. Conscious. by a groomer./vet hygienist And when one points out the fact that pathology really exists below the gumline where no 'vet hygienist' dare go in a conscious dog, and if they had just spent what they spent in those 3 sessions + an extra £60-100 for a proper *dental* the dog would not have inflamed gums and awful halitosis and discharge from its perio disease regions they are really not happy.

My friend's recently set up a hospital (in USA) and they charge more than we do (for dental procedures whether extractions or scale and polish), in a less affluent area, but provide a great service- pre and post scaling pictures, gingivitis and perio grades for all teeth, electronic records, colour printouts of dental charts with each tooth's health detailed and pre and post-op pictures, radiographs of teeth included everytime and excellent dental-ly educated vet techs means the clients are much more on board. Also I think people in the states are more concerned about teeth (their own and their dogs!) in general than we are in the UK!

£50 dentals? wow.

Yes I have heard of these dentists doing unnecessary work, just for profit............

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2000/apr/23/anthonybrowne.theobserver

(looks like dentists on the whole are pretty crappy )
And the media talks of vets doing work unneccessarily just for profit, and the panorama programme made us look bad, and we were mad because we are not all like that and hated being atrred with one brush, and people not knowing OUR reality on the ground- lets treat our fellow professional with courtesy and not trash his entire profession and ostracize him on our forum eh?Doesn't look good or professional.
Our 'fellow professional' seems perfectly capable of defending himself! I think it is great having human dentists making an appearance. Human doctors would be great too!
