I don't think meerkats would be much use for you Michael - very poor eating by all accounts - tough as old boot leather.

Yes, but they will lay through their first winter. Usually change them every 2 years.

No I did mean it 100%. Not keeping them as pets - they are there to lay eggs. Will get some new ones in spring.

You know they are supposed to reduce/stop laying in the winter and particularly during the Autumn moult?

No just pragmatic, I make "pragmatic adjustments" to the necks of my chickens from time to time. They either get lengthened or shortened as handy.

Yes there had indeed been a breakdown in the social group - she had just had a litter and was separated from the group, part of a colony at a local agricultural college.

Just went with Clindamycin and meloxicam - hopefully that will keep her more comfortable and sort out those wounds.

Not the friendliest of characters...

If the owner has multiples meerkats then you could ask her to bring along another, you know for a comparison.....

Anyways, what are they like as pets - they look funny little creatures. Chickens stopped laying so I killed them, have an empty run. A few Meerkats for winter?

(why a 'k' and not a 'c'?)

I can't think of another forum I've ever been on where undoubted experts are so free with their advice. Really can't thank Marie and Mark enough (yes, I know there are a bunch of other excellent experts here, but this particular thread is about meerkats).

Really, these people are lifesavers.

If fighting then you need to look at breakdown in the group social structure as well as treating the wounds. As monogastrics they cope fine with standard canine/feline antibiotics and certainly worth covering for secondary infection as they often have grubby mouths.

Quiz the owner about numbers, sex ratio, any change in health of dominant animals, space provided in the enclosure, and hide/basking opportunities as if there is a problem then it will resurface as soon as this one is returned and the aggression can be even more intense after separation even if brief.
