It's too far to justify the journey and travel time but got me thinking. At one time my boss used to add 1 or 2 ml of dexafort to epiotic or leo ear

Re: Steroids in allergic otitis externa

I use predforte in cleanaural (5ml in a 50ml bottle or 10ml in a 100ml bottle) quite regularly in these sorts of ears and it really makes a big difference to the cases in my opinion. Just reassure owners you did mean to use an eye preparation down the ears as they tend to think you are a bit loopy and ensure the label on the cleanaural reflects the added product. I have also used it neat a few times for maximum benefits in acute flare up situations.

Hi Anthony, thanks for that haven't tried those but can defintiely see why they'd work better!

Re: Steroids in allergic otitis externa
Pred Forte drops
Steroids are invaluable IMHO in allergic O.E to get the stenosis and inflammation under control IMHO so one can actually have a look down the ear.

Pred Forte drops are very useful for long term control of allergic doggy ears (better than systemic steroids coz minimal side effects tho you do get some skin thinning and HA axis effects)

Malacetic otic good for those dogs who are prone to malassezia infections and is bactericidal but not necc good for all allergic ears and easily irritates inflamed ears further due to its low pH. Also not good to use with a topical fluroquinolone ;)

Re: Steroids in allergic otitis externa

I miss the Malacetic-HC which was lovely for atopic ears

I'll often add steroids to home-brew OE mix (baytril/dex/cleaner)

We have some atopic dogs that do well with cortavance, and a couple that the dermatologist has put on pred forte drops (down the ears)

Re: Steroids in allergic otitis externa
topically applied 'roids are a good way to go
Yep, even after a resection which was supposed to be curative, Panolog or human Synalar would return the cauliflower skin in an allergic poodle or alsation to normal, to the animal's obvious rapid relief.

Re: Steroids in allergic otitis externa

Given that a large proportion or recurrent OE cases are secondary to atopy the use of corticosteroids is logical. I guess if the ears are currently the only site of irritation then topically applied 'roids are a good way to go provided you sorted any secondary infections and don't exacerbate those. How about a squirt of Cortavance as well as your ear cleaners?
