Did a faecal sample on a 4mth old lab with constant diarrhoea and the lab analysis has found coccidial oocysts. It was a skin case and it just suddenly got worse and looked awful, poor dog.
It got better but - eek! However prior to that I'd used a lot ( I'm old!)

Re: coccidial oocysts

I used to use TMSP al the time for skin cases especially large dogs. it works well, and it is dirt cheap.

In that time I had one dog that seemed to go a bit lame and we thought it might be immune mediated polyarthtritis , with no proof, because i was using TMSP - never had any dry eye or any of that liver/ skin necrolysis stuff that sounds so horrible.

The only serious adverse reaction to antibiotics I have seen in 22 years of clinical practice are two cases of skin eruptions that were due to potentiated amoxycillin, and they were really nasty. People forget that adverse reactions can happen with any drug

But if you need to treat coccidians you really have no choice - nothing else works -so there is little point beating yourself up over it.However these days I almost never use tri sulfas unless there is a real need for it - bowing to political pressure, but given that there are almost always alternatives, why choose a product that might cause problems later? I'm not totally convinced that tri sulfas are so dangerous , but ...

Re: coccidial oocysts

I've sent them away with viscotears to use during treatment, so if nothing else it means they'll have to have a good look at the eyes three times a day....

Re: coccidial oocysts
Warn owner to come back if eyes go sticky - they never do.
The owners come back or the eyes go sticky?

I've certainly seen dry eye on trimethoprim sulfa, luckily the owners did come back

Re: coccidial oocysts

That's great, thanks :-)

Re: coccidial oocysts

Steph - the dry eye (in my opinion) is massively overplayed. You do get a measurable reduction in tear production when on Tx, but that resolves once you stop. You can dispense some eye lube as well if it will make you sleep better at night.

Just crack on.
Have another question on this subject - I have a Westie puppy with isospora (and quite underweight with significant diarrhoea so I think warrants treating) - we have Septrin suspension but the formulary says it can cause dry eye especially in prone breeds - would people go ahead anyway (with STT every few days) or continue with supportive care only and hope it clears itself?

Cheers,

Got the final final report back today and the pup has campylobacter as well, so the whole hat trick. Happy days. I'm sure the report said erythromycin for this as well so going for trimethoprim and erythromycin. The pup is dead bright just constantly skittery. Anyone know what the chances are of this pup having some degree of immunocompromise with all these varied bugs floating about in its system?

Just wondering.

Cheers

Not for protozoans afaik. Was there Campy on board as well? i one had a pup that had campy, salmonella, toxocara and giardia and isispora all at once.

Best treatment for these protozoans is sulphonamides, i usually use septrin. However cats go nuts at the taste, needs careful thinking/ planning. I miss borgal for small animals,,,,

However the isospora and crypto infections in pups are often self limiting, often i find that by the time the bacteriology is back they have done so well treatment seems pointless. Where i worry is in litters of young animals from less than salubrious backgrounds, they can often be knocked for six.

Re: coccidial oocysts

Thanks folks...just found the rest of the report...cryptosporidium and isospora species were identified.
