2 year old gecko. 2 days ago had a beetle on its back, which the owners removed (? relevant or not). O have gradually noticed since then that he cannot use his hindlimbs properly. In the consult he was dragging his back end

Re: gecko

[quote user="Mark Rowland"]

It looks as there is NSHP and possibly a spinal fracture around the thoracolumbar area ( but I can't be certain from the quality on my screen). However this gecko looks emaciated and I would be suspicious iof crypto in a case like this. A faecal exam would be helpful. Otherwise husbandry review and supportive care are required pending faecal results. I would hospitalise if you can for this.

what kind of gecko is it?

To me the bones don't look very dense on that x-ray, although it hasn't come out very well on here so difficult to tell. I would suspect MBD and so you really need to quiz the owners about the husbandry, make sure the temperatures are right and measured by a decent thermometer. Some people don't seem to understand that setting the thermostat to the required temperature is not the same as measuring the temperature, and the stick on thermometers for fish tanks aren't very accurate, you really need a digital thermometer. Also make sure the UV light is within a reasonable distance of where the gecko actually sits and isn't the other side of a piece of glass. They say he has calcium supplements but how are these given and is he really getting enough?

The radiopaque fragments could be pieces of grit in the intestines but it's difficult to tell. Also the tail looks quite thin but that depends on what type of gecko it is.

Hopefully one of the exotic people will be along soon with some better advice.
