Hi - this is a 7 year old Hermnas tortoise - he developed sl diarrhoea last week that has not settled, no change in food and on a good diet. I took some rads, and the 2 dvs are at different settings. One shows a gassy area in the (stomach?) area

Re: Tortoise rads

I assume the lateral view was done with a horizontal beam (it is just that I can't see what tortie is stood on, like you usually can with this view)? Sorry if you have done one but not posted it, but a horizontal beam cranial/caudal view can be really useful too..... !

Re: Tortoise rads

Hello.

This totroise has evidence of poor husbandry practices whiich need to be addressed. (Calcium supplementation, UV provision, Correct environmental temperatures etc.) You say good diet, can you elaborate at all?

I would go for a faecal wet prep as a start and culture if there is no obvious parasite load. (whack the microscope up to high power and look for lots of small flagellates also). You are correct in that there is gaseous stomach distension and on the lateral you can see it pushing into the lung space. Flagyl at 20mg/kg daily is a good antibiotic to start with and keep up the fluids and supportive care.

Goodluck
