The owner said that the cat didn't appear to be painful with eye, but had noticed that there was more in the way of serous

Re: Cat with a strange eye...

Yes I would fully agree with Martin - I too have seen these in farm cats with chronic flu as kittens. We had 2 litter mates some years ago who were both affected in one or both eyes, and indeed there was scar tissue adhering the third lids/conjunctiva to the cornea. We attempted repair when they were neutered (first time we saw them), but both rescarred really quickly, and subsequently lived the rest of their lives happily but with very little sight.

Re: Cat with a strange eye...

I have seen this with a kitten that had neglected (probably herpes) conjunctivitis/keratits when tiny which ulcerated and the conjunctiva/nictitans adhered to the cornea. I tried to surgically resect the pseudomembrane but the rest of the cornea was pretty non existent and was just a bed of granulation tissue which scarred and we were not really much further forward, I offered referral for a possible corneal transplant but the cat was happy and the owner declined. Equally I've had them when there is a normal eye underneath so It's have a go at it just give then a realistic guarded prognosis but its unlike you'll be able to reconstruct a normal 3rd eyelid.

Re: Cat with a strange eye...

Second the vote for a picture: genuinely curious about this one - eyes are very often strange, in my experience, but always fascinating

Re: Cat with a strange eye...

I think a picture would be useful; I don't think it's a membrane.
