Saw a rescue greyhound today which had lost both upper canines, and had well-healed holes where they once were, right into nasal cavity. Doesn't seem to cause the dog much trouble (although the foster mentioned occasional reverse sneezing

Re: oronasal fistulae in greyhound- any dentist-y types about??

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

I use this phrase quite regularly and it seems to satisfy most clients.

Re: oronasal fistulae in greyhound- any dentist-y types about??

Thanks all!! I have to admit, my initial instinct was to leave well alone, but wasn't sure if that was because that was the best course of action for teh dog, or because I was a bit tentative about trying to fix it . You've all made me feel better about leaving it be!! I'll speak to the foster mum (who has helpfully been finding information about fixing these on google and passing it on to me!) and tell her that the expert opinion is to leave it be!

Appreciate your advice!

Re: oronasal fistulae in greyhound- any dentist-y types about??

PS

You could Xray it to see how much bone is missing.

Re: oronasal fistulae in greyhound- any dentist-y types about??

If there is no rhinitis, be it chronic or intermittent acute, from what you describe I'd be inclined to leave well alone.

If it really bothers the owners you can fix it but "counsel" them first.

The surgery is straightforward in principle but can fail.

Whether it is feasible for the veterinary surgeon depends on the individual surgeon's skill, talent, preference, inclination and equipment.

Re: oronasal fistulae in greyhound- any dentist-y types about??

Depends on what it looks like... I don't really like leaving oronasal fistulas; I think they cause discomfort - just my own impression, mind. Anyway, if feasible, I'd repair with a flap.

Re: oronasal fistulae in greyhound- any dentist-y types about??
Thoughts?
The dog has an abnormality but, it seems, no problem.

I would leave it alone.

Re: oronasal fistulae in greyhound- any dentist-y types about??
Doesn't seem to cause the dog much trouble
Then leave well alone.

I've seen a few cases that I have just monitored and never had a problem yet. The surgery looks 'doable' in general practice but complications seem commonly reported. CF something not causing a problem.
