Double check (and then triple check) the foot with hoof testers to try and localise the most painful point. Percuss the walls of the hoof in case the abscess is beneath the wall rather than the sole. Palpate the coronary band and heels to see if an abscess is about to burst out at the top. Pare the sole and frog to look for obvious penetrations. If it is an abscess it will burst out somewhere eventually. Other less likely diagnoses - severe bruising, sepis of synovial structures of the foot - (coffin joint/navicular bursa/tendon sheath) or fracture of pedal bone. Next step if worried - xray foot.

Re: Acute and sudden lameness hind leg need help!

as far as im concerned she is vaccinated..

Re: Acute and sudden lameness hind leg need help!

she has been poulticed since wed and she was not shod in her hind legs dp no in other feet.. she was able to walk even if v lame but standing she preferred to stay with the toe on the floor..

Re: Acute and sudden lameness hind leg need help!

If its a traumatic prick, did you check tetanus status?

I guess so, if you didn't find a cause (not saying I would have done any better!)

How long have you poulticed for? Was the mare shod, and if so did you remove the shoe?

Could just be a laminitis on the one foot. DP's on other feet?
