The K-Laser was the first Class IV therapeutic veterinary laser to enter the UK human and veterinary market from North America and has the biggest uptake of veterinary clinics across the United Kingdom. They have a range of single or dual wavelength 8 and 12W lasers for hospitals, vets and nurses.

It was currently being used by the USA team during the Olympics to ensure competitors remain active and injury free whilst competing.

There was a recent double page article in the Veterinary Business Journal (August 2012) showcasing four veterinary practices and the benefits they have seen both medically and financially from incorporating the K-Laser into their post surgical and medical treatment protocols.

In addition there is a Webinar on Thursday the 16th of August 9pm through the Webinar Vet - that is open for all vets, physiotherapists and nurses to attend whether you are a member or not. It will also educate the listener on how to differentiate a good therapeutic medical laser from a non-efficacious laser.

KRUUSE do two different types of class IV lasers as well as a Focal soundwave therapy laser.

I must say, it does sound a little unusual. I have set up a number of trials and the results have been very positive indeed. It would be useful to discuss this with you as something seems amiss somewhere.

Just amazing, absolutey unbelievable - I agree with your comments, I think the opening and closing ceremonies could have been better.

Still, London looked great and the performances were, well, just brilliant!

The olympics were amazing I was less impressed by opening and closing ceremonies but everything else was impeccable! And London survived it - woo hoo!

One trial in particular is 14 pages long, and titled -

Efficacy of low-level laser therapy in the management of neck pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised placebo or active-treatment controlled trials (published in the lancet)

I am happy to share my findings with you. :)

I have one at home at the moment - one of the guys from KRUUSE lent it to me to try on my horse's tendon injury. Apparently it's about 20k worth of kit. Not sure it did much for the tendon though - 8wk scan showed no difference from first scan. Wondering what else I can try it on now!

Low-level laser therapy reduces
time to ambulation in dogs after
hemilaminectomy: a preliminary study

OBJECTIVES: A prospective study to determine if low-level laser therapy and surgery for intervertebral
disk herniation encourage ambulation faster than surgery alone.
METHODS: Thirty-six dogs with acute paraparesis/paraplegia due to acute intervertebral disk herniation
were evaluated and given a modified Frankel score. Dogs with scores 0 to 3 were included in the
study. Dogs were assigned to the control group (1) or the laser treatment group (2) based on alternating
order of presentation. All dogs underwent surgery for their herniated disk. Dogs in group 2 were
treated postoperatively with low-level laser therapy daily for five days, or until they achieved a modified
Frankel score of 4. A 5×200-mW 810-nm cluster array was used to deliver 25 W/cm2 to the skin.
All dogs were scored daily by the investigators using the modified Frankel scoring system.
RESULTS: The time to achieve a modified Frankel score of 4 was significantly lower (P=0·0016) in the
low-level laser therapy group (median 3·5 days) than the control group (median 14 days).
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Low-level laser therapy in combination with surgery decreases the time to ambulation
in dogs with T3-L3 myelopathy secondary to intervertebral disk herniation.

Yes the Class IV K-Laser is presently being used by the USA Olympic football, athletics and equestrian team for muscular, ligament and tendon acute injuries or inflammation. Though the main use in medical or veterinary practice is for biostimulation of healing, chronic pain management, post surgical use and wound management.

Yes, I have heard of them, and are interested from a scientific point of view on their physiological effects.

I also am led to believe a good class IV will set you back several thousands if not 6 figures.

I also read fourth hand somewhere their effects where proven point more towards tissue healing than pain relief.

Would you be kind enough to point me towards what you would consider robust clinical trials in peer reviewed publications if you know of them, wound related journal or analgesia related would be ideal.

As you may imagine, the cost of the laser (if true from what I heard for a class IV) immediately puts it out of the league of the vast majority of vets as it will not pay for itself.

But the concept is fascinating.
