I spoke to Summit at congress about this. At the moment, it's provided in quite unwieldy 1ml syringes (full, so plunger sticking all the way out!) in boxes. The dose for the cat is the same as Felimazole - in this prep, 0.1ml provides 2.5mg methamizole (from what I remember) and apparently you can switch straight over. The owner is advised to wear gloves when applying but I agree, the risk of coming into contact with the drug seems much higher than with tabs. Also, the risk of over or under-dosing is more obvious.

They are in the process of looking at better ways of packaging it to make it easier to handle and, as mentioned above, lengthen the shelf life.

Re: Transdermal methimazole

We use it frequently in Australia (no cascade so can go straight to it with a compounding pharmacy). We have it made up in special dosing pens of 2.5mg in 0.12mL dose, BID. the pens are 16mL in total and cost around $100 to the client. Not really cheap but very good owner compliance and seems to work very well.

Re: Transdermal methimazole

I've just noticed that Summit now have this available to order on their website - has anyone used it yet?

The problem with the studies is that I believe in all of them the preparation was applied to the pinna but no buster collar or similar was used and so I have always wondered whether the cats just groom it off and get the effect that way!

Re: Transdermal methimazole

The Specials Lab will make transdermal carbimazole for you, but it was super expensive the last I got.

Re: Transdermal methimazole

Could be useful for those fractious cats that won't take their pills but the risk of self administration sounds a bit higher than inhaling crushed Felimazole tablets!
