I've gone and booked myself a rat spay/pyo for next week. The rat is 1 year old, has intermittent lethargy with a bloody vaginal discharge. Am assuming pyo/metritis as responds to baytril and metacam. I've never spayed a rat, so a step-by-step

Re: rat spay

This will sound really obvious, but make you have small enough instruments!
Ventral midline spey is easy to perform to treat uterine pathology. You will likely find a neoplasm or polyp in the uterus somewhere causing your problem. The uterus is obvious on entry, as it is quite large for the species. Its as straightforward as doing a midline cat spey just in miniature. opioid, NSAID and gas will be fine, just add some sc fluids.

Ovariectomy for younger rats is well described in the new Quesenberry and Carpenter. It really is very easy and I would recommend you get that book and look at the pictures.
