3 year old female spayed rabbit (notes say 'english' for breed but she looks like a dwarf lop) with quite severe urinary incontinence. Her back end is just soaked in urine, despite regular bottom baths by the owner. She had a course of lapizole

Re: urinary incontinent rabbit

*bump*

I have a similar case at the moment, that's booked in for ultrasound tomorrow - so any tips on female rabbit catheterisation would be appreciated!!

Re: urinary incontinent rabbit

The bladder ultrasound was performed today and revealed a bladder rather echogenic with sludge. The BSAVA manual of rabbits says to catheterise and flush out the bladder.... but how do you do that in a female rabbit? Any advice on procedure and size of catheter please?

Haematology and blood glucose were wnl. Septrin has been ordered in (any reason for it to be better than baytril?). Both bunnies are on lapizole. Plan is to xray the lumbar spine and bladder whilst under the anaesthetic for the bladder flushing.

Thanks.

Re: urinary incontinent rabbit

I read the results for E. cuniculi as being low . I swear we were taught that the higher the dilution factor, the less the number of organisms/antibodies. I don't understand but you're right. Thanks.

Re: urinary incontinent rabbit

So you have a high positive E cuniculi IgG. I would get an IgM to check for active disease, Get some good xrays to rule out spinal disease or bladder sludge. Probably an ultrasound exam to check bladder wall thinkness and start off on some meloxicam and possibly some antibacterials (e.g. septrin) until you have the IgM and other results back. Most of these cases have some underlying pathology so you have to look a little deeper to get where you need to be.
