I find this very helpful in visceral pain generally, in bloated rabbits I like to combine it with Metoclopramide. I think they do better with both meds. And thanks for all the helpful hints, the next bloated rabbit will definitely have it's glucose levels checked! I second the remarks about lists like this being the best cpd ever!

Go find a horse with colic (ie visceral pain). Give it flunixin IV. See what happens.

NSAIDS can be brilliant for visceral pain, don't discount the humble NSAID.

Re: Buscopan in rabbits

Do people routinely use meloxicam for intestinal pain in rabbits (or other species)?
Granted I wouldn't be just pushing one analgesic to death, either. But I tend to use more like 0.5mg/kg of meloxicam (and often much higher in the smaller furries). I definitely see a difference with increased doses

Re: Buscopan in rabbits
What doses of drugs are you giving
Metoclop 1mg/kg, cisapride 0.15ml (3.3kg rabbit), meloxicam 0.3mg/kg

Bunny looking better today - eating hay now as well and seems less bloated and more active. Still not right though, so have fluids, blood sampling, ranitidine and possible more ready and waiting!
BB - I don't mean to be patronising but you can put any mammalian blood through your analyser, the only reason you have to name the species is because that is the reference range it will print next to the results! Bunny values are easily found in books or online.

Re: Buscopan in rabbits

What doses of drugs are you giving?
Run bloods as for dog and cat it's better than nothing.
Can you run a haematology also
Feel free to post results

Re: Buscopan in rabbits

Abdominal radiographs done yesterday by a colleague - stomach slightly bloated, caecum bloated, rest of the intestines nad.
Not acute, been grumbling on since wednesday according to O (inappetance, not total anorexia, and evidence of bloat developing). BG was 6mmol/L on arrival and was 8mmol/L this morning (we read that paper too!)

Is currently being syringed critical care and is eating greens and dandilions but is very quiet. I had an acute stasis giant rabbit in 2 nights ago with a bg of 23. I sent her home the next day returned to normal with a glucose of 5.6 after medical treatment alone. It's an important part but only part of the picture IMO.

Re: Buscopan in rabbits

I use it iv at 0.1 ml per kg for acute cases, and tablets at 1/2 bid for most rabbits for many cases over last 7 years , not sure where those doses came from . Find it very useful. Since I started using it the rescue feels we have had much better success with treatment, until recently we had a great medicaI success rate. I have started measuring glucose too . If this is non surgical Adding in vetergesic seems to really help some too. Good luck .

Re: Buscopan in rabbits

I would be looking at more diagnostics too - bloat and stasis are only symptoms of an underlying disease process or stressor secondarily affecting the GI tract and if the cause persists then the symptoms are unlikely to resolve. If no cause is identified on history and exam I tend to do two 30 degree oblique lateral views of the skull, an abdominal lateral radiograph and basic biochemistry as a starting point.

Is this acute? If so would be ruling out obstruction first and blood glucose is very useful for this - stasis bunnies tend to have moderate to low glucose (rarely >15mmol/l) whereas obstructed cases have elevated levels (>20mmol/l). Very quick and easy way to differentiate surgical emergencies.
