Recently on a Sunday I was presented with a 9yo Doberman whom had ingested up to two containers ( poss 500g each ) of a 'Pet Friendly' Slug Pellet product.
I've had a dog presented with ingestion of "pet friendly" slug bait before, and the active ingredient was either a ferrous or feric (I can't remmeber which) ion. I spoke to the VPIS about it, and the amount the dog hag ingested did amount to a toxic dose of iron. I don't think the box listed the active ingredient, but the VPIS where familiar with the name and knew what it contained. It may or may not be the same product that your Doberman ingested.

No, it's a different one. I think the one you're talking about must be the one made by Growing Success; it's certified for organic use, and contains 10g/kg ferric phosphate (which is listed on the pot). It ought to be safe, and is certainly a lot better than the many methaldehyde products crowding the garden centre shelves. However, interesting to hear that it can also cause problems.

How did your dog get hold of it... was he hoovering, or did he eat the pot? And what happened... was he ok>

I can't remember how he got hold it, (it was quite a while ago), but the dog was ok.

Re: 'Pet Friendly' Slug Pellets...

sadly i dont yet know the outcome of this case as I had to hand it over to a colleague on wednesday and do not return until monday. As far as i know the owner had laid all the bait in the garden and the dog then consumed it from there, probably along with alot of soil also.

Re: 'Pet Friendly' Slug Pellets...

[quote user="Jo Jones"]

"Signs of caffeine poisoning:

Within 1-2 hours of exposure: mild to severe hyperactivity, restlessness, vomiting, tachycardia (elevated heart rate), hypertension (elevated blood pressure), abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, hyperthermia (elevated body temperature) seizures, and collapse."

Not quite what you have seen but a kilo of coffee husk and vegetable fat would certainly have quite an effect on the gastro-intestinal tract!

Perhaps symptoms seen were secondary effects rather than primary toxicity.

The safety claims seem in order once the product has been used but the makers were probably not expecting two containers to be consumed in one sitting!
