Can anyone recommend me a decent, straightforward orthopaedic textbook, please?
I'm not looking at cracking spines, just some basic fracture repairs where money may be an issue. Thinking basic ex fix and maybe plates. I have done a couple

Re: Orthopaedic Textbook

Too basic and things probably a bit too simplified
Tell me more!
Sorry, did not mean to offend anyone, especially not the authors! (Luckily been able to avoid going through the implant failure section with a fine comb for detail!)

To clarify - I like the manual, especially to show owners the plan. It is roughly what I was expected to know as a final year student - I actually recognise some of the diagrams from my notes. Where I would like more detail is with the approaches and I think having a good approach and exposure is essential in having good placement of implants and therefore a good outcome. That said, I have an old Miller's Guide to the dissection of the dog (inherited from my mum, but luckily the anatomy doesn't change, although some names did), that I also consult when planning a fracture repair.

Most CPD's will focus on the techniques and skills - I've attended an amazing and very affordable AO course ( recommended) a few years ago, so you really need a good grasp of anatomy and book to help with the approaches - and even then things will be different. Also, a good practical nurse is invaluable - I remember vividly as a student at Vet School - the surgeon was having sweat wiped off his brow to reduce a difficult fracture when the theatre sister suggested to change the dog's position and everything fitted into place...

Ps: I am waiting for a new Piermattei Atlas of surgical approaches, I don't suppose they change that much, but think I can now upgrade from the old red one that I also inherited.

Re: Orthopaedic Textbook
Too basic and things probably a bit too simplified
We have Slatter but I do hate that book.

I have ordered Piermatteiand the BSAVA manual. In the grand scheme of things it is a tiny cost in comparison to the instruments I am about to order!

I do remember Malcolm Ness talking about doing an orthopaedic basics CPD course and if he reads this I may be interested.

Re: Orthopaedic Textbook
Too basic and things probably a bit too simplified. I second Piermatti et al, but I always consult more than one book before attempting any fracture repair.
Well I reckon Piermattei is one of the best if not the best on orthopaedics. But Michael was asking for a "basic" so I think BSAVA manual is a good book to start doing basic procedures.

Although I would consult more than one book as well, and keeping in mind that every patient is individual, thus as far as I'll have exactly the same fracture on the picture of the book, my patient will probably respond in a different way!

If you're only interested in fracture, the BSAVA Small Animal Fracture Repair and Management is a simple and good book with lot of pictures and drawings.
