Just a quick question re a 5 yr old female GP I saw yesterday. Has got alopecia along back and flanks (non scaling, non pruritic, no inflammation etc) and adbo distension (bulging either side, not free fluid in the abdo). My thoughts

Re: Guinea Pig - skin + adbo issues

Is there adequate vitamin C in the diet? GPs are one of the few (possibly only) animals that can suffer vitamin C deficiency. I have never seen it in GPs because ours have always had adequate diets but your description of the skin lesions sounds very like those that I have seen in children abroad. First time I saw it, and did not at first recognise it, I thought it might be ringworm. Don't know whether it would account for the abdo though. Check a UFAW handbook. If it is vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) the response can be quite dramatic. I have seen skin lesions in kids (children) clear in a week although in GPs it will take longer for the hair to grow.

They haven't been used much and the effects are probably variable as the cysts can arise from different ovarian segments. I've done a couple, others I know have used more and the success rate for resolution of signs seems to be 70-90%. Place them sc and those cases I have had havnt had relapse yet ( up to 14 months). Signs star to resolve after a few weeks, same with the hcg in my experience. Hope this helps.

Re: Guinea Pig - skin + adbo issues

Hi Mark

As always, thanks for the quick reply. Not sure I can palpate ovaries for sure, but does feel much more likely that any abdo mass/es etc.

Re Deslorelin: we have the 4.7mg (am I correct in thinking Suprelorin? Excuse my ignorance). And that is just s/c, right? Does it last 6m as well? Would you expect to see a reduction in abdo size and skin changes after either the implant or the hcG and if so, how quickly?

Thanks again,
Sandra

Re: Guinea Pig - skin + adbo issues

Hi
Deslorelin implants are an option also which won't do any harm a least.
Can you palate large ovaries?
Spey is best if confirmed but hcg or deslorelin are an option.
Good luck
