Any ideas on species (they are approx 3cm long)?

These seem to be the most popular choices (I would feel rat more likely given size - 3.7cm long), but I still think their tails are too short:

cf: http://northernlightsrattery.wordpress.com/2007/09/23/baby-rats-day-4/
What a waste of gin (or did you still make use of it?)
I did offer it to the nurses, but for some reason they were less than enthusiastic...
If you found it in East Africa I would say naked mole rat:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_mole_rat

Fascinating creatures because their genetics make them behave like hive insects!
Interesting creatures as you say, but I'm guessing somewhat rare in Suffolk!

One of our nurses dissected one: GIT looks carnivorous. Had paired pale structures on dorsal neck - ?some sort of glands.

I'm going for stoat or weasel (largely because it's more interesting than rat!) : http://www.dkimages.com/discover/home/animals/mammals/carnivores/Reproduction-and-Development/Weasels/Weasels-5.html
