Is Primucell a good solution for vaccination in a household where 2 cats have had FIP within last 6 months ? Both now deceased . Owner wants to get a new kitten , how long would you advise to wait ?

Help and advise most appreciated

Re: Primucell

The idea of blood testing comes from Dianne Addie, who recommends it if adding cats to a multi cat household that has previously had FIP. equally this is the market that vaccination is aimed at (only available in USA and some European countries) but yes kittens have to have early weaning etc. my own view is that it would be more sensible just not getting more cats in a multi cat household. But in this case waiting a short period should be fine.

Re: Primucell

Recommend a three month wait and to get a 'moggy' kitten from a local family home (not multicat household) and take pot-luck. FeLV/FIV bloods if worried.

Most of these kittens seem to be bomb (but not car) proof!

Re: Primucell

Martin said it very well, most kittens are corona positive, and I don't see the benefit of vax unles breeder separates + weans early and then vaccinates to ensure corona negative cats. Blood for FCoV are useless to check for risk of FIP. So in short, the owner can go ahead and get the cat, its not going to 'catch' FIP and vaccinating is not likely to help at all unless it is somehow miraculously FCoV negative.

As someone mentioned, Dr Addies website is a good resource.

Secondly a very high proportion of cats are FCoV +ve and only a very small proportion develop FIP and I'm not presently aware that there is any way of predicting which FCoV cats will develop FIP so there seems little point in blood testing. This is as much an environmental/stress problem, particularly due to overcrowding, as an infectious one. My main concern would not be the vaccination/FCoV status of any new cat but how many other cats are already in the household and what other stress factors there are, if it is already overcrowded then I would advise against any new cats. I suspect there is a link between vaccination and FIP developing in FCoV cats, particularly FeLV vaccine, presumably due to distribution of immune system resources and associated stress, to the extent that I won't vaccinate a kitten with an FIV vaccine if it has symptoms suspicious of FCoV diarrhoea until it is clear or proved -ve. Common sense not to overload an overstretched immune system I feel.

Re: Primucell

Dianne Addie addresses this on her website. CoV lasts maybe 7 weeks in environment so wouldn't have to wait that long and don't see a benefit to vaccination in that context. If so then they are likely to be infected and so you could test their FCoV antibody titre to find out. If high then prob not a good time to introduce another cat. If no other cats then wait a couple of months and disinfect well. Never used Primucell as not entirely convinced by it.

Re: Primucell

Cannot believe this owner wants to get a kitten ! Studies didn't suggest a sufficient protection. I'd rather wait at least three months before getting a new kitten. On the other hand this one might be already FOC+ as a high percentage of the cat population is anyway, so no guarantees that it won't get FIP. What a nasty disease.
