Pleural effusion, drained. Is HCM the most common?
Wondering about what sort of survival times to expect - is it as hopeless as cats? And do they respond well at all to treatment? 7yo ferret, no other

Re: ferret cardio questions

Hi David, I'd be very interested to see the images if you don't mind posting them, never seen a ferret with CHF, but we don't have many on our books..

Thanks in advance

Great echo on this one, like a very obedient cat and no rib intereference which was lovely - can post images if anyone interested. Impressive hypertrophy (11mm) and LA size (11mm).

Thanks for the offer Mark - I was using figures from Vastenburg et al 2004 for ferrets GA's with iso.

Which I believe were similar to sedated values.

I saw one at the weekend that I suspected had CHF and HCM - ascites+++, tachycardic >320, imaging not very successful and sedation or GA would have killed it. Survival time was 24hrs - but it did belong to one of our nurses

Re: ferret cardio questions

Hi David,
HCM is not common in ferrets but does occur. I have normals at work ( day off today) but I think they are sedated values also so you may already have them. If not I will send them if you wish.
Treat as for cats really, the prognosis isn't great, all you can really do is manage the CHF.
Some bloodwork wouldn't hurt to help with the prognosis. Thyroid neoplasia has been described but is rare.

Hope this helps let me know if you need the normals
