Yes, I was using the cost figure. So £150-£200 gets the client a 16% reduction in infection rates after 2 years continuous exposure to extreme conditions in the absence of sandfly protection. There is no data how that is affected by the presence of sandfly protection which will still be necessary and therefore the benefit may well be significantly lower than 16%.

Re: 'CaniLeish' vaccine - anyone used it?
at £70 for the course, value for money considered but that value would depend on the owners perspective.
We´re using actually canileish in an endemic place (Valencia-Spain). I agree with the maltese collegue, and can add one more option, there´s a product called leishguard (domperidone) patented for its use to increase the celular response, very intresting for the prevention.

There have been a few serious reactions to the vaccine!!!! don´t forget it.

Regards from Spain

Re: 'CaniLeish' vaccine - anyone used it?

Just seen the rep and the figures are interesting.

In extreme conditions ie highly endemic area, dogs continuously housed outside for 2 years with no sandfly protection 23.1% of dogs can be expected to be infected. Once vaccinated they state that 92.7% DON'T get infected. This still equates to 7.3% do get infected and therefore in extreme conditions of 100% dogs vaccinated 16% don't get infected when they would otherwise.

That doesn't sound dramatic to me but relative to the benefit of distemper vaccines would be significantly more worthwhile in extreme conditions. It makes absolue sense to vaccinate in endemic ares as I assume it will reduce the susceptable host population and there will also be the effects os herd immunity but for a dog on a 2 week break? I think a very close look at the side effects of the vaccine would be important and at £70 for the course, value for money considered but that value would depend on the owners perspective. How does that benefit compare to the use of sandfly protection?

Hadn't thought about whether we should be discussing it with all PETS clients - maybe we need to review our protocols.
I don't know if it's available in the UK. You have to give 3 vaccinations 3 weeks apart for primo vaccination and then yearly boosters. Important is that the owners realise that the dog can still get leishmaniosis despite vaccination. It reduces the risk (don't remember the exact figures, but I can check it for you if you like) and doesn't prevent it 100%. It's still advisable to use Scalibor or Advantix.

Virbac's BVT Leishmania K distinguishes between false positive reactions in vaccinated dogs and true infection/exposure.

My personal feeling is that there are more vaccination reactions compared to the usual vaccins, but they all seem mild (local reaction, diarrhea, one or 2 off days after vaccin, fever etc).

A lot of people here are put off by the price.
