I have used them in a cat with good results. It was a trial and error case, so unfortunately not very scientific (and probably going to attract some criticism from the forum). The cat was very pruritic around its eyes and had to wear a buster collar for extended periods until we finally found that antihistamine drops worked very well. Unfortunately no experience in dogs.

Ditto: ucerax in place of atarax - can get in tablet and syrup form.

Yes, but then gone back to judicious dexamethasone use!

pretty well cover the current scientific understanding and recommendations

We have previously used two week trials of clemastine, hydroxyzine, diphenhydramine and chlorpheniramine to see if they help (though I accept the limitations of such a trial), but given the above, seem to be doing less of this.
When we've had difficulty getting Atarax we've sourced Ucerax.
