I run Vetsys from Dunlops at the moment. I do have to pay a monthly fee, but that includes the computers etc.

Plan for the long term is for my dad to write me a system, then we can dispense with it (lucky enough to have a very IT savvy dad)

Have to admit, I do like Vetsys- very easy to use. (new staff seem to pick it up very easily) And colourful!

I admit it depends on your PMS provider, but I'd hope your contract includes some level of ongoing support, upgrades, new features. You also need to factor in the cost of data migration as some companies seem to chagre the earth. The long contract is tedious - if the software is good surely you'll continue to use it; if it's not good you want to be able to walk away.

Do SPVS still run their IT day?

Somebody needs to write a Which? style report on the systems, esp. if they have experience of different systems. So locums must be in a good position to do so.

Having locumed for the past 2 years and seen most of the big players I find Voyager from Jupiter the most user friendly not sure about running costs tho but it is fast and seems like vets have been involved in it's development unlike some!

Mind you I am talking from a purely clinical point of view - the stock control/reporting side I can't comment on...

We are happy with EzVetPro. Quite inexpensive to buy but not particularly cheap to pay for the licence. Rock solid and reliable if not particularly pretty to look at!

Buy Filemaker and write your own? It might not be as "slick" or pretty but you will know exactly how it works.

Or, buy something like MYOB for everything accounting, and use Filemaker for the rest?
