It seems that bid dosing is too frequent for her, but I don't think it's lasting long enough when we are giving it once a day.
I know that other types of Insulin were discontinued

Re: Long acting insulin

The advantage of glargine is that because it becomes protein bound and is a 'semi-slow release' formulation it works a bit like PZI and you don't get the peaks and troughs quite like you do with standard lente insulin. I've not used it in dogs but you may find it is a compromise as a once daily injection between Caninsulin and PZI. As always however, at risk of teaching granny to suck eggs, don't discount lack of compliance as a complicating factor with the owner giving varying doses inadvertently either by poor injection technique or failing to vary the injection site or even inconsistent feeding and exercise regimes. It is always worth reviewing their protocol, IME owners never fail to surprise me the lengths they can go to to confound the best laid plans!

Re: Long acting insulin

thanks for the suggestions! Human PZIs are available - we use Hypurin which we get from Dunlops.

Re: Long acting insulin

When the other types of insulin were discontinued, I had many patients (all cats though) on PZI, many had been tried on caninsulin before and for several reasons they were better on PZI. As far as I'm aware, you can get the human variety still (through NVS). You should be fine according to the cascade as you have tried the veterinary equivalent first. I think you can use glargine in dogs, but I don't think it is as good in dogs as in cats.
