Lab results - no
leukocytes or organisms seen on gram stain, negative cultures both 48hr

If there were no luekocytes then they are not pustules - if fluid filled must be vesiculo/bullous? Maybe primary i.e. AI disease or secondary i.e. inflammation in teh dermis or trauma/scaled/burns etc.

I'd go for biopsy - try and get one or two early lesions - intact if poss :)

Re: Skin condition

But Malaseb is licensed only for the case of seborrhoea with either pyoderma or Malassezia. Where is the suggestion that the dog has seborrhoea?

It's about the most over-used product ever. And one of the most abused according to the cascade. If the dog does not have seborrhoea, it dries the skin out and does far more harm than good.

It's great when used appropriately - i.e. seborrhoea + Malassezia/Pyoderma. Otherwise, select a more appropriate shampoo.

Hi John,

before taking my suggestion litterally, I asked if the dog had any improvement on Malaseb before and further test needed to rule out conditions that affects the skin, one of which would be checking for Malassezia.

Possible treatment planned according to tests.

I agree there are other very good shampoos on the Market which can be used and selected for other conditions.

Malaseb, and continue on antibiotics, and if you have a chance doing culture and sensitivity.

Is living in a pack meaning poor hygienic conditions?

And, did this pup had any response to Malaseb?

From what I can gather now, I would try to rule out external parasites first, and then probably food allergy as 2nd differential.

My starting treatment, would be one week of prednisolone to break the pruritus circle and avoid further self damage to the skin layers.

Malaseb, and continue on antibiotics, and if you have a chance doing culture and sensitivity.

Aludex would be added to the therapy, probably even if skin scrape not positive, just because it's a pup, and skin scrape are not always successful.

Would reassess the skin condition in 7-10 days.

You can also use a chlorexidine spray for the foot pads, which will have a more localized action.

Cheers,

I would rule out parasitic causes first of all - after all what's common is common :) The pad involvement is a bit weird but skin scrapes are always worth doing on any pruritic dig, especially a young terrier.

Re: Skin condition

Nope, food and environment the same.
