Occasionally I have found some pets do better with a rump s/c injection - owner holds pet around neck and faces away from you - nice because they can't see the injection occuring

It is getting to the point where I am having a rethink on brands. I fill the syringe using the supplied green needle and change to a yellow one and have (almost) never had a dog react in the past.

I will speak to Pfizer this morning. It is possible that because the yellow needle is so fine that it might go partially i/m without me or the patient knowing until the stuff starts to be injected but I have spent a lot of time making sure my patients "enjoy" a trip to the vets and this is tending to hijack the work we have done.

I routinely hold the syringe in my hand for a time to warm the vaccine. I have not found any issues with Vanguard 7 so something must be different with the Lepto.

Re: Yelping with Lepto vaccine

Yes!!!

We use Vanguard Lepto, and occasionally i get a dog cry and cry, as bad as cerenia can be. It seems to be difficult to predict, but I think the cause is either having a portion go intradermal, or perhaps intramuscular, rather than true subcutaneous.

I report each event, and have discussed with the sales rep, who says it is not considered an issue. Most of our vets concur, but about 3 or 4 of us (out of 16+) have had similar experiences - rare and unpredictable, but very upsetting.

I found this really disconcerting - to the point where i actually stopped using the lepto only and gave a full Vanguard 7 to each dog regardless.

Then...
I got a few shriekers on the Vanguard 7 as well, and it has been since then that I take a lot more time to make sure the needle is truly subcut before injecting - and so far no further problems.

I'd be interested in any comments, both on brand and whether or not people feel it is solely a lepto issue.

Re: Yelping with Lepto vaccine

We use vanguard lepto and can't say I've noticed any issues.

Re: Yelping with Lepto vaccine

All fine here with Intervet. I have had the occasional dog yelp not at the needle or at the injection or at withdrawal, but then get all yelpy a few minutes after. It's never lasted more than a few seconds, not happened recently with any leptos and almost exclusively in teeny yappy handbag type dogs. I think sometimes it's just the temperature of the vaccine being out of a fridge, or just that injections feel unusual. Over-reacting! I've never had them come back for swelling/pain or any obvious adverse effects following this.

Re: Yelping with Lepto vaccine

We use Intervet's Nobivac Lepto2 & have had no problems.
