Young spaniel with an already impressive history of skin disease. Skin scrape / swab and allergy panels. Swab coagulase positive staph (natch); scrape negative; blood panel an unholy mess on foods.

High values on beef, rice, potato, wheat, barley, soya and oats. Mild milk and chicken.

Leaving aside the discussion on usefulness of blood panels, can anybody think of a balanced diet which misses out the above?

G'day JHL,

Only saw this thread by accident as I don't travel this way often.

The answer is a resounding YES. Of course all carnivores should be fed whole carcasses or acceptable second best rmb.

On junk food every cell of the body is bathed in toxins 24/7. Remove the junk food and you almost hear a collective sigh of relief. Throw the dog a whole raw rabbit or chicken carcass and you almost hear a collective swooning of trillions of cells. Watch as the dog/cat/ferret begins to glow with health from tip of nose to tip of tail and all parts in between.

Of course skin is healthier when heart, liver, kidneys, immune system, sebaceous glands, hair follicles are healthier.

Lyn Thomson, Bristol grad, read Raw Meaty Bones, incorporated the principles into her practice and saw fabulous benefits for her patients. Today Lynn wrote to me saying she's about to open her fourth shop www.rawessentials.co.nz . She still does a bit of nutritional consulting, but by and large no need. Simply feed the animals their appropriate food and medicine and things don't go wrong.

On an immediately practical level, and sight unseen, with these skin cases I always check to see that teeth and gums are OK. If not, then book a dental clean/extractions. Usually start on course of Cephalexin and prescribe Malaseb baths to control secondary bact/yeast. Simultaneously, of course banish all junk foods and start on whole rabbits/chicken frames/fish or similar.

If your client is a bit wary (due to centuries of brainwashing) get him/her to check out Lyn's site and my site: www.rawmeatybones.com

But can you leave this aside ? Every derm expert I've ever heard on the subject says these food panels are worthless. What did the other allergy panels show ?

Take a careful diet history and pick a novel protein diet or hydrolysed diet based on this. Ignore the lab results completely. Atopica unlikely to be of benefit if food hypersensitivity.

Atopica? Actually... how well does this really work, and on what? I keep wanting to try it, and my clients can't afford it.
