He presented with exophthalmus about 6 weeks ago. Radiography confirmed an abscess around one of his upper molar roots. The offending tooth was extracted and the eye was enucleated.
How difficult is extracting the offending tooth? Tools required?
There is a special elevator (I think designed by David Crossley) which works well, though patience is required...

EDIT: I see Mark's got there before me!

Re: Guinea pig with post-enucleation abscess

Again its the nidus of infection that needs debriding, This is usually a tooth root, Crossley luxators and curved mosquito forceps (and patience) is what is generally required.

Unfortunately not all of my guinea pig owners pa for radiographs and tooth removal, sometimes it's just symptomatic treatment. We then remove the pus, debride as far as possible and instill ointment daily with surprisingly good success. Having said that I know this is not the proper way to do it.

Re: Guinea pig with post-enucleation abscess

Thanks, Mark.
Further debridement of the nidus of infection is required, possibly another tooth root or some infected bone. I would stitch in a honey soaked swab, cont abs as before and remove the swab after a week at which point I would search the cavity for a focus and possibly go for more extractions if required. More radiographs may help. Post them if you wish.
