I am not sure how the tendering process works as I no longer do farm work. My suspicion is that things will change by 'creep' in the way MHS work did. Most practices kept their own work or used it as a reason to get out. Then one group started to employ cheaper European vets (we had a couple of Spanish and one Italian vet) and put in cheap tenders for more and more plants.

I don't know what the situation is now but as time went on private practices were pushed out. It has been nearly 15 years since I stopped MHS work so I may be very out of date!

I expect a lot of cherry picking to take place in time.

I thought so originally but tbh after the NADIS meeting I can't see much changing. If they get our area it looks like we will be testing our own farms as before, for similar remuneration. There might be a bit more checking up on us to satisfy the QA part of the deal but essentially it looks like the same job.

I went to the NADIS meeting in Wetherby the other week - they're planning on tendering for everything except the extreme SW and the area around Bristol/Sussex (Vets West and Westpoint dominated areas I think). They are expecting the 3 groups that Michael mentioned to tender but in reality once the start of the process is announced any number of groups may come out of the woodwork.

The problem is that DEFRA show no signs of meeting their proposed tendering process launch date (date given was the end of March ie. next week) so nothing further will be known until that happens, whenever that is. It also means that the proposed implementation date of April 2013 is looking distinctly unlikely.

Maybe the same people are in charge that are in charge of setting up SAM.....

I've spoken to both NADIS and Kieth Hirst at Vetco. We seem to be getting mixed reports about what exactly is happening though. Has anyone heard anything regarding the contingency work?

There are a number of companies interested:

XL Farmcare, trading off the XL Vets name, anyone can join

NADIS (the people who do the animal disease monitoring in UK Vet etc)

Then a chap who worked for the above decided to go it alone under the guise of VetCo

They are all I know about, but expect those 3 to try and bid for everywhere.

We've had 2 companies contact us in England and are dealing with another in Wales. Great living on border. Found out the other day that England and Wales use different charts for interpreting when on severe. I'm glad I rarely venture out for testing these days
