Lurking in the cupboard are some Temgesic (buprenorphine) 200 microgram tablets. I'd like to use them for an excision arthroplasty pussy cat instead of squirting the vial under the tongue. Problem is, I can't find an oral dose, in the BSAVA analgesia

Re: Temgesic sublingual tablets - dose?

Yes, we've never had any adverse reactions, but we do find they give excellent analgesia . We make sure they're securely applied and labelled. If they are going home with one on, we give the owner an information sheet and talk them through it, as well as going through an unlicensed drug form. Never used where there may be interactions with small children. You have to allow for additional analgesia after they are applied until the drug reaches therapeutic levels (1-2 doses of buprenorphine or other opiate as stocked.) One client was so impressed with how comfortable her cat was after an op, that she requested one was used when the cat had to come in for something unrelated at a later date.

Re: Temgesic sublingual tablets - dose?

Has anyone tried fentanyl patches in cats? I've heard completely opposing views on them.

I had a cat with pancreatitis a couple of weeks ago that went completely spaced out after 2 well-spaced doses of sublingual vetergesic. The owner said he (ie the cat) spent the night pacing round the house looking like he was hallucinating. The open vial was still on the kennel so definitely vetergesic (I had almost convinced myself I'd given ketamine instead!)

Re: Temgesic sublingual tablets - dose?

Thought I'd give them a go, but having read the comments especially Bob's, I'll be back to the squirting a double dose of licenced product under the tongue, unless the owner comes back with a very happy cat.

Re: Temgesic sublingual tablets - dose?

Shirley you're not suggesting using human oral products orally off license when there's a licensed animal product to adminster via the wrong route! This is why I have used tramadol and I have found it to be a good drug for the exotics and useful for the dogs and cats. My problem has always been the small dosing hence the use of the smaller mg tablets and the soluble stuff. I find there is a fine line between effectiveness and stonedness (I had a client this am who said her cat was really spaced on the stuff). I have used it for orthopaedic procedures in cats post op. TBH I didnt know temgesic tablets existed. I never really used torb tablets for post op pain as again I was never sure of their efficacy.

Live and learn I suppose or as Masala would put it "The race is not over" (where have I seen that before Oh yes....)

Re: Temgesic sublingual tablets - dose?

Yes Temgesic (see post above for reasons why)

We seem to use Tramadol like smarties but there is no official licensed data behind it's use. All there is, is a feeling of 'It will be OK', therefore use it. We're all afraid of NSAID's in caesarians as the drug companies have found an issue on clinical testing, and then dish out tramadol even though there is no follow up data readily available.

In this case this is a human preperation but using buprenorphine extensively with Vets Now, it is a drug I am comfortable with in cats and seems to be a very good form of pain relief that's safe.

Dogs: 0.02 mg/kg i.v., i.m., s.c. q6h.

From formulary, just use same dose.
