anyone used Trocoxil? What is your opinion about it?
Is it effective enough to last the whole month?
Cheers,

For pain relief it was fab, but he started losing weight and when we looked at his bloods , his liver enzymes and bile acids were up. I'm pretty sure this was a concurrent problem but trocoxil didn't help. He's a few months off it now, and on tramadol. His blood levels are still raised but much better than before but he's a lot less mobile.

Pfizer assured me that a) the GI side effects would have started after 24-48 hrs if it was the Trocoxil and b) that treatment would be just as effective as in another dog on a daily dose on one of the other NSAIDs which had had the medication withdrawn at the onset of illness i.e. a long acting NSAID is no more likely to compromise treatment due its side effects than a short acting one. I will not be using it again in a hurry.

Re: Trocoxil

[quote user="Michael Woodhouse"]

But for some of the dogs we have on it, they have been transformed by it, especially one dog with chronic hock arthritis who was really unwilling to exercise on either rimadyl or metacam, but is happy and moving well on trocoxil. I think it is like all of the nsaids, some dogs seem to do better on one than the other.

It certainly took me quite a while to try it as it seemed odd to give a drug that was in the system so long, but I do feel it has a place, not as frontline treatment maybe, but in the chronic cases can be useful. We have one dog who lives with his disabled owner in care (a Leonard Cheshire home), and the staff and owner would not cope easily with daily meds, but once a month is so much easier to manage - one member of staff is in charge of his meds and dosing him.

Re: Trocoxil

I haven't used Troxocil and haven't been tempted so can't comment, but have used 'newer safer better' NSAIDs such as Cimalgex and Onsior and have to say Rimadyl and Metacam still get my vote in terms of pain relief and effectiveness with minimal side effects in most dogs. I'm a big fan.

We use it a lot and have had people whose dog has been on other NSAIDs say how much better the pet has been on Trocoxil. I believe that the marketing from Pfizer about the 24 hours-per-day relief is accurate, based on the dogs activity and owners' perceptions. The owners like the convenience, and they like the little fridge magnet as a reminder to dose as well.

We have suffered no significant number of side-effects, maybe the odd diarrhoea but no more than you get with say meloxicam. You do need to pick your cases and avoid dogs with a history of atopy, but on the other hand I've anaesthetised Trocoxil dogs without problem. A long-term NSAID does seem counter-intuitive, but any worries have been unfounded so far.

As I said, yep, I'm a fan.
